Factors to consider when choosing the right fitting…
1. Pressure Rating: Given the risk of leakage, JIC fittings and NPT threads are not recommended for applications involving high pressure or high vibration. Most OEMs use o-ring face seals and DIN metric fittings for higher pressure applications. Specifically, when using appropriate materials and structures, o-ring face seals can handle high pressures: for example, high-hardness nitrile rubber (NBR) o-rings with a hardness of 90 ± 5 Shore A can withstand pressures between 35-50MPa (350-500 bar); when static sealing with special back-up rings, o-rings can reach a maximum pressure of 200MPa; generally, the pressure range of o-rings can be between 0.5 to 1000 bar depending on materials, dimensions and designs.
2. Availability: Because JIC and NPT fittings have been widely applied in various fields for years, such as NPT fittings being a key component in petrochemical, water treatment and water supply systems, as well as in fluid transmission systems of semiconductor, chemical and other industries, they are more easily accessible, less costly and a viable solution for low pressure applications.
3. Reliability:NPT fittings were once widely preferred on-site for their convenient leak-fixing method—minor seepage could seemingly be resolved by further tightening the connections. Yet this common practice often results in cracked fitting bodies, which may trigger severe equipment failure and safety hazards if ignored. Similarly, JIC connectors remain prone to cracked flare ends when subjected to excessive torque. In contrast, O-ring face seal and DIN metric fittings deliver superior long-term reliability. Their built-in elastomeric sealing layer on the mating contact surface completely avoids the risks of over-tightening damage and persistent fluid leakage.
4.
